"India's rising influence in the global market cannot be ignored, although its current share of world trade remains relatively small. tralac recently posted a short descriptive analysis and the individual spreadsheets of India's trading relationship with Africa.
Data is sourced from the commercially obtainable World Trade Atlas source (www.gtis.com/gta). Using Indian trade data, the analysis reveals that there has been a significant increase in both India's imports from Africa and Indian exports to Africa since 2003. During 2006, Indian imports from Africa totalled US$12.6 billion, while exports to Africa were US$9.5 billion.
Access to natural resources remains India's principal interest in the continent, but it is not its only interest.
This leads us to the following question:
Do these trends suggest that India is following the Chinese trade patterns in Africa?"
