Kenya calls for bids for big police housing upgrade

The Kenyan government claims to be on track to complete the construction and upgrading of 27 000 housing units for the Kenya Police by the end of this year.

Roads and Public Works Ministry official Michael Kamau says the project, which includes new housing units and the renovation of existing quarters, is part of the Kenya police strategic plan for 2004-2008.

Already the government has set aside $8,8-million for implementation of these projects. Bids for the proposed completion of Kibish Police Lines, General Service Unit (GSU) Base Camp and Administration Police (AP) Lines in North Eastern Province have now been invited.

The scoop of civil works will include road, parking and sewer infrastructure, while associated electrical services will include power generation, electrical installation, street lighting, testing and commissioning.

Associated mechanical services will include borehole drilling, overhead water tanks and pumps, plumbing and drainage, fire protection, kitchen equipment, liquefied petroleum gas and bulk fuel tanks, compressed air and air conditioning, testing and commissioning.

Interested bidders must proof of having undertaken works of similar magnitude and complexity in the past five years, should be ready to commit a bid bond of $73 529 in form of bank guarantee and demonstrate sound financial standing and adequate access to bank credit line.

Kibish, located in the northern part of Kenya along the Kenya - Ethiopia border, is in Turkana District, approximately 450 km from the capital city Nairobi.

The tender closes on February 6.
