Acsa to upgrade Port Elizabeth departures terminal

The Port Elizabeth airport’s departures terminal would be upgraded by early 2010, with the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) looking for contractors to undertake the work.

Ngonyana Okpanum Hewitt-Coleman architect Graham Grant told Engineering News Online that the upgrade would involve only interior alteration and not the construction of new structures.

More checkout counters would be installed and the departure security points would be increased, while the overall floor space of the departures lounge would be increased.

Acsa has put out a tender for service providers to undertake the upgrade. Interested parties had until July 20 to submit bids, but would have to attend a compulsory briefing on the project at the airport on July 6.

Grant noted that the intention was to get the project going as soon as possible and expected the adjudication of the tender to be finalised by August.

Meanwhile, a local company, William Scott Painters, has nearly finished an R800 000 contract to externally redecorate the airport complex, said Grant.
