Canada contributes 4.8 mln. USD for WFP logistics hub construction

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) contributed more than 4.8 million US dollars to support the establishment of a humanitarian logistics hub and cargo in Djibouti by the World Food Program (WFP), WFP said.
According to a press release it sent to ENA on Friday, the logistics hub will enable WFP and the wider humanitarian community to store and transport humanitarian assistance for the region more efficiently and cost-effectively.
The hub will also enable WFP to move food more quickly to its operations in Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia and northern Kenya.
WFP Country Director in Djibouti, Mario Touchette commended Canada's consistent and generous support for WFP humanitarian work in the region.
According to the director, the construction of the logistics hub will allow WFP to save 1.5 million US dollars a year, mainly by improved vessel handling and bulk storage capacity.
The hub will be built and managed by WFP's Ethiopia operation, which moves the majority of its food commodities through the Djibouti port in partnership with the WFP Djibouti office.
