Second Afro- Arab Summit Kicks-Off Tomorrow with High Level Official Meeting in Tripoli

TRIPOLI, Libya, October 6, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)

The Second Afro- Arab Summit bringing together sixty-six Arabic speaking countries opens tomorrow 6 October 2010, with the High Level Official meeting, at the El Mehari Hotel in Tripoli, The Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.

Meanwhile, the African and Arab Ministerial Council is scheduled to take place on 8 October 2010, while the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Afro-Arab countries will hold on 10 October 2010, in Sirte, Libya.

Jointly organised by the African Union Commission (AUC); the League of Arab States (LAS); and the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (Host country), the 2nd Afro-Arab Summit is in line with the Decision of the Fifteenth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union held in Kampala, Republic of Uganda, from 25 to 27 July 2010.

The Summit, which will take place thirty three years after the last Afro-Arab Summit was held, is expected to consider a number of issues on the agenda including a Joint Report on Political and Economic Developments in Africa by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mr. Jean Ping and the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Amr Moussa. The Summit will also adopt a new Strategic Framework for Afro-Arab Cooperation focusing on four priority areas; namely Political and Peace and Security; Investment Promotion and Trade; Agriculture and Food Security and Social and Cultural Cooperation. The Summit will endorse a Plan of Action, which elaborates specific areas for strategic cooperation under the four priority areas and provide an Implementation, Follow-up and Monitoring mechanism.

Furthermore, the Second Afro-Arab Summit is expected to adopt some Resolutions and a Political Declaration aimed at strengthening Afro-Arab cooperation.
