US State Department official Karl Wycoff pressures Madagascar

Antananarivo - An American envoy visiting Madagascar has called for a return to democracy on the troubled Indian Ocean island.

US State Department official Karl Wycoff told reporters in the capital that the US was calling for a resumption of negotiations to restore a constitutional, democratic government. He says a process embarked on by coup leader Andry Rajoelina is insufficiently democratic.

Rajoelina has proposed new elections, but his plan does not have the support of the president he ousted and two other former presidents.

Rajoelina, a former disc jockey and mayor of the capital, has been internationally isolated since ousting Marc Ravalomanana in 2009.

Wycoff has been meeting with leaders in Madagascar since Saturday.
